Basic biosignal research package under MATLAB

g.BASEpack is a complete system used to acquire and process multi-modal biosignals such as EEG, ECG, EMG, EOG,... and also physical signals. The system includes an analog biosignal amplifier with 10 channels (g.BSamp), a coupling box for full access to analog and digital signals, a 16 channel 16-bit DAQ card with cable, recording software (g.DAQsys) and advanced biosignal analysis software (g.BSanalyze) with EEG- and ECG-toolbox.

Auditory stimuli are presented to the subject via the computer's soundcard by earphones. Visual stimuli are generated via a flashing lamp. Timing information of auditory and visual stimuli are stored in synchrony with the biosignals. Subject's reactions via button press can also be stored with the biosignals.

The Basic Biosignal Research Package provides all hardware and software for recording and analysis of multi-modal biosignal data as well as a stimulation set to perform various neuro- and psychophysiological experiments in your lab for life science, clinical research and teaching/training.

Example applications

  • Auditory evoked potential analysis (AEP, BAEP, MAEP)
  • Visual stimulation, visually evoked potentials (VEP)
  • Standard ECG derivations (Goldberger, Einthoven, Wilson) and analysis
  • QRS-COMPLEX detection, heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) analysis in the time- and frequency domain
  • EEG event-related desynchronization (ERD/ERS) analysis for psychological and physiological experiments
  • Sleep research
  • Muscle contraction pattern analysis
  • Eye-blink / eye-movement pattern analysis

The g.DAQsys recording software is easy to use. Data are visualized on the screen with event markers that can be set via the keyboard.

Data can be loaded with g.BSanalyze for data preprocessing, data transformation and data analyses.

Data analysis and artifact treatment is no longer a difficult thing. All steps from raw data to the ready result plots are performed by a mouse-click. The whole processing sequence is stored in a journal file and can be used for automatic batch processing of further data sets.

The panel at right shows an evoked potential computed from one EEG channel. The result viewer provides a special tool for measuring peak amplitudes and latency times.

ECG and heart rate analyses including heart rate variability (HRV) analyses in the time- and frequency-domain are very interesting for many scientific questions. These parameters reflect the activity of the autonomeous nervous system and are also indicators for mental and emotional stress.

g.BSanalyze ECG toolbox yields graphical protocols including relevant values and geometric measures for HRV analyses.

Package includes

  • g.BSamp - biosignal amplifier
  • g.Power - medical mains power supply
  • g.DAQsys - data acquisition system with software, coupling box, DAQ-card and cables
  • g.BSanalyze - offline biosignal analysis toolbox including specialized EEG and ECG processing toolboxes
  • Headphones - for auditory stimulation via soundcard
  • Flash lamp - for visual stimulation
  • Reaction button - for recording subject's reactions to stimuli
  • Example paradigms for AEP, VEP, ERD/ERS experiments
