Background

Familiar with fMRI ano/or fNIRS?  Learn more about the technology behind optical tomography (OT) and dynamic optical tomography (DYNOT).

OT Background Optical Tomography (OT) makes use of the fact that light penetrates up to several centimeters of biological tissue, and a bright white light source directed toward a hand results in a reddish glow where light is transmitted through the tissue. This is due to the pigment hemoglobin in the red blood cells, which primarily absorbs wavelengths outside the red and near infrared spectrum.
DYNOT Background DYnamic Near-Infrared Optical Tomography, DYNOT, is a new noninvasive functional imaging method that employs low-energetic laser radiation to probe highly scattering media, such as tissue.  The method is called dynamic because multiple optical tomographic data sets are acquired in a continuous fashion at high repetition rates (about several images per second) thus allowing the study of physiologic changes inside the target.
