Components

Each ActiveTwo system is built upon a basic set of items known as the Base System.  The Base System includes:
  • A/D Interface Box with no amplifier/converter modules (no channels installed)
  • USB 2.0 Interface Box with USB 2.0 cable
  • Rechargeable Battery Unit - two each
  • Battery Charger with A/C Adapter
  • ActiView Data Acquisition Software
Typical Additional Components
  • Amplifier / Converter Modules - up to 32 eight-channel modules per A/D Interface box
  • Active Electrodes - A/D Interface can accommodate up to 256 active electrodes in sets of 32 on high-density connectors and / or up to eight with individual leads and touch proof connectors
  • Head Caps - with electrode holders and position labels
  • Active Electrodes - with individual leads and touch-proof connectors
  • Trigger interface cable
  • Optional Sensors - for galvanic skin response, respiration, temperature or pulse / plethysmograph
Other Options
  • Custom-configured auxiliary inputs on the A/D Interface Box.  These inputs are appropriate for use with battery-powered or self-powered signal sources such as a condenser microphone or a photocell.
  • Analog Input Box with with up to 16 bipolar / 32 monopolar channels and fiber-optic coupling to main A/D Interface Box
  • Double-capacity battery for longer system operation
  • Buffer Box to adapt passive electrodes to channels configured for active electrodes
You May Also Need
  • Consumable supplies
  • Post-processing software
  • Electrode position measurement hardware/software
  • Stimulus delivery software
  • Behavioral response measurement hardware
  • Installation and training

In addition, you will need computers, monitors and interface cables/devices to streamline operation between operator area and subject chamber.  We find that most customers prefer to source these items through their normal channels.  If you prefer to have us provide these items, we can do so if it is more convenient for you.

ActiveTwo head caps

The ActiveTwo head cap, for use only with the ActiveTwo system, was developed in cooperation with Dr. Peter Praamstra at the Behavioral Brain Sciences Center, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.  The head cap consists of an elastic cap with plastic electrode holders.  The cap itself does not contain electrodes - only plastic electrode holders that receive the pin-type active electrodes.

Rechargable battery

The standard power supply of the A/D interface and the active electrodes utilizes a high-capacity battery. The battery power supply contains a lead-acid battery and a shutdown circuit to prevent the battery from deep discharge. The combination of a high-capacity battery and very low power consumption of the A/D interface and active electrodes makes the ActiveTwo the only truly battery powered, high-resolution EEG / ERP system.

Battery charger

A sophisticated charger is supplied with the system to allow quick charging of the battery when used in cyclic applications. The special sealed lead-acid batteries that are used in the battery-box can be charged very quickly with the specially designed charging circuit. Full charging of an empty battery takes about 3½ hours.

A/D box

The ActiveTwo A/D Interface forms an ultra-compact, low power front-end (close to the subject) in which up to 280 sensor-signals are digitized. These sensor inputs can be active electrodes measuring EEG, EMG or ECG, or by using the optional buffer box, normal passive electrodes and a range of additional active sensors measuring parameters like respiration, skin conductance, temperature, pulse and force can be used.

Optical receiver

The ActiveTwo A/D Interface forms an ultra-compact, low power front-end (close to the subject) in which up to 280 sensor-signals are digitized. These sensor inputs can be active electrodes measuring EEG, EMG or ECG, or by using the optional buffer box, normal passive electrodes and a range of additional active sensors measuring parameters like respiration, skin conductance, temperature, pulse and force can be used.

Active electrodes

By integrating the first amplifier stage with a sintered Ag/AgCl electrode, extremely low-noise measurements free of interference are now possible without any skin preparation.  The active electrode is a sensor with a very low output impedance, so all problems with regards to capacitive coupling between the cable and sources of interference, as well as any artifacts by cable and connector movements are completely eliminated.

Optional accessories

Optional accessories include integrated skin conductance coupler with electrodes, respiratory effort sensor, temperature sensor, plethysmograph (for heart rate/pulse), microphone, photocell and the Jazz vigilance monitor providing precise eye-position, forehad plethysmograph and more.

Amplifier/converter

Amplifier / Converter Modules are miniature PC boards that are installed in the A/D Interface Box to add channels to the ActiveTwo system.  Each Amplifier / Converter board adds eight monopolar channels to the system, and each A/D Interface Box can accommodate up to eight Amplifier / Converter Modules (256 channels).

ActiView software

The ActiveTwo system is delivered with free open-source acquisition software called ActiView.  ActiView is a complete acquisition program designed to display all ActiveTwo channels on screen and save all the data to a disk in .BDF format.  The layout is designed to give the user a quick and simple check of the quality of the data.  ActiView can be used for acquisition of EEG / ECG / EMG signals and more.

ActiveTwo API for MATLABĀ®

The ActiveTwo API for MATLAB® is a programming interface to allow MATLAB developers to capture live data directly from ActiveTwo with low latency and minimal overhead. It has a very sophisticated design, requiring no toolboxes and allowing you to edit code on the fly as you run the application. An integrated device simulator permits off-line development. A built-in data quality check alerts you of data integrity problems. (MATLAB is a registered trademark of The MathWorks, Inc.)
